Boulevard Realty is a proud participant of Hire Houston Youth, a City program matching high school and college-age talent with Houston employers for a summer internship. Mayor Turner’s Director of Education Juliet Stipeche launched this program last year, noting that Houston was a little behind compared to other cities of our size when it came to youth employment rates. This program is now in its second year, and we enjoyed it so much last year that we ended up keeping one of our interns around for good as a part-time employee! This year brings us a fresh batch of two interns, Brandon and Michael. Brandon will be working as a Marketing Assistant this summer while Michael will be manning the front desk. With these new Boulevardians on board, we think it’s going to be a summer full of fun!
Coincidentally, the City also has a program called the Summer of Fun Pass from METRO that allows Houston’s youth to get around the city on METRO for free! Wondering what the program was all about, we knew exactly who to ask. Turns out, our intern Brandon uses METRO every day. Here’s what he had to say:
The City of Houston is working with METRO to make it easier for youth to get around the city for free! If you or someone you know is in grades K-12, then you (or they) are eligible for a Summer of Fun Pass card which allows you to ride METRO free of charge anytime this summer!
The savings even continue after September 1, 2017, when your card automatically converts to a METRO Student QR Fare card which discounts you 50 percent!
Listed below are 3 ways to apply :
- Online at RideMETRO.org under the Summer of Fun link.
- In person at the METRO RideStore located at 1900 Main or 1001 Travis St.
- Call 713-635-4000 to request a mail-in application.
If you are curious to know how using the Summer of Fun Pass can be beneficial to you, I can show you how, as I take advantage of it not only for fun, but to get to work at Boulevard Realty too!
As an intern for Boulevard who doesn’t own a car, using the Metro definitely comes in handy. Here, I’ll guide you through my route for work and also a few more leisurely destinations.
Living in Montrose, I hop on the 56 Airline/Montrose line at the Westheimer & Montrose bus stop. This bus route takes me from Montrose, through Fourth Ward, and then The Heights where Boulevard Realty is located. Conveniently, there is a bus stop right in front of Boulevard Realty at Studewood just before Highland where I get off. When it’s time to go home, I get on the same bus line that takes me back to my Westheimer stop.
When I want to go to one of the many museums in the Museum district, such as Museum of Fine Arts, I can also get on the 56 which also stops right in front of the museum! I can also go visit the Menil Collection, and the beautiful Rothko Chapel which are a few blocks away from the Montrose & Branard stop. If I would like to go to the Galleria to have a shopping day, I can hop on the 82 Westheimer which takes me Westbound along Westheimer where I get off at Westheimer & McCue Rd.
For when I’d like to study for exams and do homework, I like to go to Inversion Coffee & Art using the 56 at Montrose & Bomar St. I can also take the 56 to get a bite to eat at Barnaby’s Cafe in The Heights, Tacos A-GO-GO, and BB’s Cafes, which are all just steps away from the same bus stop I would get off at for work, at Studewood & White Oak Dr.

Tip: If you have a smartphone, use Apple Maps or Google Maps to put in your destination and maps will give you the best Metro route option to take.
I’m pretty excited to have access to this pass for the summer. Since I don’t have to pay per day, I’m encouraged to go out and “rediscover” other parts of Houston this month and next before school starts back up. If you know a kid who might want to experience their own summer of fun via METRO, be sure to send them to ridemetro.org soon! This entry was posted in Resources
