One of the things we love about our new Heights home on Studewood is the whir of fast-moving traffic up and down what is a major thoroughfare connecting the Heights (where it ends its northbound life as Studewood), Washington Corridor (where it goes by Studemont) Neartown/Montrose (where it’s Montrose Boulevard), and Hermann Park (where it emerges from the roundabout that Mecom Fountain calls home). To keep things moving on the Studewood stretch of this important inner loop artery, the City of Houston designated the center lane as a contraflow lane.
While the contraflow lane is meant to make life easier for Heights commuters (and it does), it’s also the reason you might find yourself honked at or nearing a head on collision if you aren’t familiar with the concept. Basically, the purpose of the contraflow lane is to change directions throughout the day to create an additional inbound/outbound lane during peak hours in order to avoid traffic congestion. It’s stretched between White Oak Drive and N Main Street.
Even facing the street all day long we were a little confused ourselves about the hours of the contraflow lane switch ups, so when we started to get questions we set out to find answers. We found ourselves on a bit of a journey, from the Planning & Development Department to our City Councilmember’s office, and we ultimately found out that it’s programmed by the signal engineering section in the Public Works Department.
Without further ado, below is a chart of the current schedule of the contraflow lane:
|Time of Day||Direction of Contraflow|
|6:30 AM – 9 AM||Southbound|
|9 AM – 4 PM||
(Continuous two-lane left turn)
|4 PM – 6:30 PM||Northbound|
|6:30 PM – 6:30 AM||Normal Operation|
In our research, we came across this pretty nifty study that analyzes the mobility of major thoroughfares in the Greater Heights. Page 97 is about Studewood.
We hope all this clears the air for you and helps you use Studewood’s contraflow lane with confidence from here on out!This entry was posted in Recognize, Rediscover, Resources
